It's amazing how the government likes to fudge economic numbers to make things look better than what they are. . .well, considering this is lying, its not so amazing, it's typical behaviour of the government.

don"t you think it would be smart of the goverment to keep gold reasonable low. people are scared so they buy it let"s say 850.00 per oz. .they go to a gold standard & confinacape it & pay the people for let" s say 20.00 oz.. the goverment would make 830.00 oz..&have the gold back &some gold from other countries like canada
Ideally the government wouldn't have the ability to confiscate gold, however they did do it in the 30s.
Lots of investors do not keep their gold in the US.
For example, Europacific, Peter Schiff's company has their clients purchase gold from the Perth mint in Australia and its kept their.
Also, you're assuming the government would go to the gold standard to confiscate the gold. They'll most likely confiscate the gold long before they reconsider the gold standard, judging by current events.
As well, government can only control prices so much without people knowing it. I doubt they have much control over the price of gold. The only way they could really set that price is if they came out and offered to buy up gold for above market prices.
While they were on the gold standard, they tried hard to keep the price of gold low, but they printed too much money to do so, which is why Nixon had to take the US off of the gold standard in 71.
"Gold has dropped recently because investors are liquidating their assets back into dollars out of fear."
I'm sure they are scared, because if the dollar goes, gold goes as well, because the price of gold is valued in relation to the dollar. One ounce goes for about 950 dollars, which means if the dollar collapses, so does the value of gold. The only value that will left over will be the commodity/product value of gold for teeth and computer chips. ;)
"new the unemployment rate was much higher& their fooling with the gold rates too"
In relation to market panic when the gold standard was removed. It settled after that.

Yup. Market panic is causing the price of gold to rise, which means once the crisis is over, and once gold drops down to its market value, people will have lost money by buying gold.
The government is not going to go back to the gold standard without radical revolutionary events. That is not going to happen, because the big capitalists like FED. The big capitalist have more power. Therefore, it is a waste of time to speculate about what the government "should do" when the government itself is heavily influenced by the forces of the economy that are expressedly against the gold standard.

Lol, you talk as if money is going to disappear. The dollar unit is simply one method of measuring the value of gold, it isn't the essence of the value. The value of gold is held in the market place, that will only increase if the dollar crashes.
"the government itself is heavily influenced by the forces of the economy that are expressedly against the gold standard."
If market forces were against the gold standard, why has it been used as money for 5000 years? Government is against the gold standard, if the market were left to itself, different currencies would compete against each other and, if history is any indication, gold and silver would prevail as currency.
The problem you have is that it almost seems like you think government actions are the product of the market.

It is on the fiat system. You can not just *poof* start valuing something without massive circulation. Gold is not circulated, so a global crash of the dollar would lead to the circulation of gold alongside barter anarchy.
Anyway, this is not going to happen, because the gov is not printing the dollar like Weimar Germany. NOT, EVEN, CLOSE. Your entire argument rests on an assumption that is not happening.
"If market forces were against the gold standard, why has it been used as money for 5000 years?"
I'm glad you fucking asked! This is a wonderful question that I've been waiting for you to bring up!
Gold was used as a currency BECAUSE it has aesthetic beauty and BECAUSE it HAD no practical use. If it had a practical use, it probably wouldn't have been used.
Do you ever wonder why the barter system survived for so long alongside gold coinage? OH YEAH! There wasn't enough gold around for it to properly represent the real value of goods. Instead, its practical uselessness coupled with its inherent aesthetic value and easy pliability lead to its usage as a standardization of bartering values.
"Government is against the gold standard, if the market were left to itself, different currencies would compete against each other and, if history is any indication, gold and silver would prevail as currency."
Sorry, Josh, government doesn't exist in a vacuum. I guess you are just anti-science.
"The problem you have is that it almost seems like you think government actions are the product of the market."
No, I think the government is the result of cause-and-effect. The dominant power is the capitalist class, so the government must, by cause-and-effect, be the result of their power. Are you denying cause-and-effect and science?

Well, the only way they can fool with gold rates is by flooding the market with gold.
Gold has dropped recently because investors are liquidating their assets back into dollars out of fear.
It appears this has halted though as gold and silver are starting to gain value again and the US dollar is starting to drop, as it should.
